Governor Roy Cooper, and local leaders fight for North Carolinians reproductive freedom

Across the country, extremist Republican politicians are increasingly proposing and enacting bans on abortions following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Amid Republican politician’s campaign to strip away reproductive health care access from millions, several states are passing measures to defend the right to reproductive freedom.
Through an executive order signed by Governor Roy Cooper on Wednesday, North Carolina joins Colorado, Maine, Rhode Island and other states in protecting reproductive rights.
While abortion is safe and legal in North Carolina, the executive order takes steps in protecting North Carolina doctors, nurses and those who seek access to reproductive health care services.

The order also protects any patients and providers who travel to the state for reproductive health care services from being prosecuted by their home states – ensuring access to care for those who need it the most.

“The future of abortion access not only for North Carolinians but potentially the entire Southeast region is on the line in 2022, and we thank Governor Cooper for his strong advocacy in support of reproductive freedom,” stated Jenny Black, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic.
Not only is Gov. Cooper leading the way in securing reproductive rights in the state, mayors from Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Carrboro have made commitments to supporting abortion access within their own communities.
As more and more Americans express their disapproval of the Supreme Court’s decision and extremist Republican politician’s relentless attack on our fundamental rights, leaders like Gov. Roy Cooper and local communities are ensuring we have the freedom to get the care we need.
