A Dumpster Fire Fit for a King
This week marked Trump’s 100th day in office, and what a chaotic, destructive stretch it’s been. We saw Trump sign a whopping 142 executive orders, unilateral actions intended to fundamentally reshape our country without congressional approval. Embodying his authoritarian tendencies, Trump actually signed just 5 pieces of legislation passed by Congress– the lowest ever in the first 100 days of a president’s term.
The illegal abduction of a legal immigrant, the inhumane deportations of US citizens (one was a four-year-old child with Stage 4 cancer), the cuts to essential programs in areas like medical research and food assistance, the cost-spiking tariffs, the job-killing federal cuts by DOGE– pick your policy area, Trump has attempted to make it less humane, more tilted toward the wealthy few.
Some of these moves, like changing the laws around shower head pressure on a day when he also raised tariffs that shook the global economy, have shown the character of a man who is so entitled, so out of touch, that he believes he’s ascended to a king-like status.
As Trump attempts to push the country deeper into authoritarian territory, it’s easy for us to feel as if we’re losing control. That democracy is lost. That our hope for a better future has been burnt to ashes amidst a raging dumpster fire of MAGA policymaking.
But this week also reminded us that there’s a resistance, and it’s alive and well. Yesterday marked May Day, also known as International Labor Day, and protesters turned out– across North Carolina and the entire country– to speak out against MAGA’s war on working people. They advocated for Medicaid. They denounced mass federal layoffs and crushing funding cuts. They defended public schools. They supported immigrant communities.
There’s little dust collecting on protester’s signs these days. Every week, there’s another rally, another protest. And regardless of the event theme, the message is clear– we are not going to let the country we love go quietly. There’s much more fighting to do, and there’s a ton of energy left in the tank to do it.
You can join us in the fight next Tuesday, May 6 at 10 am in Bicentennial Plaza, where we’ll be hosting a rally with Oxfam America and North Carolinians from all walks of life to speak out against this administration’s decision to continue sacrificing the working class to benefit the ultra-wealthy. You can register for the event here.
As the dumpster fire rages on, know that we and so many others are standing alongside you, ready to fight for the better country that we all deserve.
