Election Night Messaging Guidance for Candidates

After many months on the campaign trail and countless interviews, rallies, debates, and door knocks, Election Night is finally here. Unfortunately, the winner for each race may not be declared for some time. It is paramount that as we wait for results, we continue to emphasize respect for the process and the need to count every vote.

Talking Points:

• I have made my case to the electorate and offered voters a clear contrast between my vision and my opponent’s vision for the future of North Carolina. Now it’s up to the voters to decide. It’s one of the greatest things about our democracy that voters get to pick their leaders.
  
  
• I look forward to having every vote counted. The process of tabulating every vote is long and rigorous, and I am so grateful to our hardworking election administration officials and trained volunteers for all their work to ensure the process goes smoothly. Let’s count every vote. 

 

• The results are not final until every vote is counted. We know that the unofficial vote results can change rapidly through the night, as different precincts and counties with different partisan leanings are tallied and reported. Some people may be eagerly refreshing the page to see if I am “up” or “down,” but I’m just waiting for the votes to be completely tallied. 

 

• The process to count votes is rigorous and transparent. The process is overseen by the bipartisan State and County Board of Elections and there are strict rules on when they can start tabulating and releasing results. 

 

• I will respect the final results, no matter who the winner is. Obviously I would be deeply honored if the electorate entrusts me with their vote and I look forward to undertaking the challenges of the office. But if the voters have selected my opponent, I will respect their choice and look forward to fighting for the rights and freedoms of North Carolinians in another manner.
