NEW POLL: Majority of North Carolina Voters, Including Republicans, Support State Courts Ensuring Election Maps Are Fair & Constitutional
RALEIGH, NC– Progress NC Action released a new poll highlighting North Carolina voters’ support for election maps that are fair & constitutional.
- 72% of respondents say that gerrymandering is a problem, with nearly half (48%) saying it is a “very serious problem.”
- 74% of respondents, including a majority of Democrats (81%) and Republicans (66%), support efforts by the courts to ensure that maps are fair and constitutional.
- 72% of respondents, including a majority of Democrats (76%) and Republicans (67%) believe that state courts should be aggressive in limiting gerrymandering.
In addition to supporting efforts by state courts to ensure maps are fair and constitutional, a majority of respondents, including Republicans, believe that Justice Phil Berger Jr. should recuse from hearing cases involving his father, Senate Leader Phil Berger.
- 72% of respondents, including a majority of Democrats (80%) and Republicans (62%), believe that Justice Phil Berger Jr. should recuse himself and let other justices hear cases involving his father.
“This poll makes it clear that North Carolina voters support our state courts taking action to ensure our election maps are fair and constitutional,” said Progress North Carolina Action Executive Director Jess Jollett. “Our courts should ensure that North Carolina voters are heard as they have in the past in redistricting cases brought by both Republicans and Democrats.”
