NC lawmakers, voting groups have one week to submit new election maps.
Friday marks the final day for lawmakers to submit new voting maps. This comes after a state Supreme Court order that designated the GOP-controlled legislature to redraw political maps, as the current maps were found to be unconstitutional.
- The current voting maps have been found to give Republican candidates clear advantages in 10 of 14 congressional seats. Expert testimonies have pointed out that the maps were designed to help elect Republicans.
- North Carolinians have frequently voiced their support for fair maps, with a majority across political lines making it clear that they want maps that give everyone fair representation.
- “The people of North Carolina deserve that not only their voices are heard, but their concerns are addressed,” stated Jo Nicholas of the League of Women Voters NC. “Building fair and representative voting districts, committed to the one person, one vote principle, will help ensure that the outcomes of North Carolina’s political contests reflect the will of the diverse population of our state. Let our voices be heard”.
Throughout the recent redistricting process, Republicans have doubled-down on the same ol’ tactics – crafting racially and partisan gerrymandered maps, disregarding their promise to North Carolinians, and willfully ignoring voters’ interests over their own political gains.
In the coming days, Republicans have the opportunity to do what they didn’t do the first time; draw constitutional voting maps that give North Carolina voters fair representation.
